Elle Fashion | Next, a contest for emerging student fashion designers, was one of the best shows I've attended yet at New York Fashion Week for several reasons. First, the venue, David Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, is beautiful. Secondly, the judging panel included fashion luminaries like Iman, Karolina Kurkova and Joe Zee, so I knew it was serious business. And third, most importantly, the fashion was actually good!
Student work can be hit or miss. There were definitely some so-so designs among the students, all of whom come from the Savannah College of Art and Design, but for the most part, the show was solid. I particularly like the fringy collection with dresses that looked like they were made of pale green hair and the collection of all white evening gowns.
The winner, whom I sadly can't recall at the moment (they announced her name, but didn't refresh our memories as to which pieces she made) received a $25,000 grant from Elle, and a second-place finalist got $10,000 from Maybelline.
